Map Information

Landscape popularity

‘How might we measure the popularity of Cornish places in terms of their landscape or nature?’

The map shows the relative popularity of different locations by measure of the number of landscape or nature photographs taken there.

Value of each grid cell was measured by counting the number of individual users uploading photographs to a geo-tagged social media resource with a particular focus on images of landscapes, natural features (such as woodlands) and animals in their natural environment. Images with a primary central subject of people, machines, vehicles or the interiors of structures, or that depict public events such as fairs or concerts, were generally excluded from the platform.

The number of users (15,413) is more appropriate than the number of photographs uploaded (113,686), as the latter can reflect the level of activity of individual photographers rather than the overall popularity of a site.
